Day 19 The finale Back2Basics, Los Angeles
B Real 8/11/00
Being that this was going to be the last show of this insane tour dubbed as Back2Basics, it was only fitting that we end this craziness in our great hometown of Los Angeles California. It felt damn good coming home. I was feeling lil tired and my voice was feeling a lil weird but I still felt really good about being home and how dope this show was gonna be. I got to the venue early. I had only played at the Olympic 2 times before this. Once with Rage Against the Machine, and the other time with for some shit I don’t remember. So I went down to check it out and see how shit was gonna go down. It was pretty mellow. I mean there wasn’t jack shit to do. Our bus was released so we had no bus at the venue (bad move) but hey shit happens. But what was rally fucked up about that was that the dressing rooms were fuckin small. I remember when they used to have pro wrestling there. I don’t know how those big motherfuckers used to chill in the lil ass dressing rooms.
So after a being at the venue checkin shit out, I realized that our equipment from Line 6 (guitar amp company) had come in and what better time to break it in. So mike G (soundman for the Hill) and I shot back to my house to pick up the new equipment. To my surprise everything was goin really well so far. I hadn’t got ten any of those stupid last minute call with people asking me “Hey man, I know it’s last minute but can you put me and 10 of my friends on the list”. That always happens in LA when we do shows, but this time no calls. Things looked really good at that point. I mean, that’s always a headache and it always happens but yesterday it was all smooth sailing. Well, except in the morning, I did have a slight bit of drama but hey fuck it shit happens.
I had to try and remember everything I had plotted out for this night of smoke layered, testosterone filled body of emotion called a concert or like Fred likes to call it a party. I wanted to take pics of everyone on the last night like graduation. The memories of this tour will stick in my head forever but pictures last longer than my memory. Remember I smoke heavily. I also had to somehow track everyone down at the end of the show to sign Excalibur, which was not an easy task. I got everyone except for Wes, Sam, and Lethal of Limp Bizkit. But I’m not worried cuz I can get those guys to sign it later. I took pics of everyone signing it so when it goes to ebay the pics will show all who signed the mighty Excalibur.
Here I will talk about the show. Before we came on, the familiar sound of the fans chanting our name “Cypress Cypress Cypress” bounced around in my head creating a buzz that no herb even the might Kush could compare with. We started our ritual prayer to start it off right, then, all hell broke loose. The home crowd came to represent the hometown hero’s in full effect. The mosh pit was intense as it had ever been on this tour. Now for those who attended any of these shows you know the mosh pits were pretty crazy and I was in a lot of them whether you seen me or not I was in there with y’all. So I can speak from experience. I think there was a few crazier one’s but out of all the one’s I had jumped into this one was the roughest. I didn’t jump during our set cuz I knew I might not make it back to finish the song and normally I would finish the song in the crowd but it was too rough. It was great man the crowd uplifted me and made me feel like I never wanted to finish the set. I wanted to keep goin, but you have to get off at some point.
During the hightime part of the show we brought out Excalibur for it’s final performance. The guy we pulled out of the crowd took a pretty good blast from Ex. I my self thought that my hit was a pussy hit. Meaning I didn’t take the real big hit I wanted to take. But a few friends of mine who were watching said to me the hit was big as hell. Oh did I mention these friends were Playmates. Yea that’s right I have friends of all kinds. But don’t start think like a bunch of pervs, like I said they’re my friends. They convinced me not to worry about the pussy hit. So I didn’t.
So like I said the show was bangin, the only thing I had left to fulfill was getting to the soundboard to get ready to take my last voyage to the meat-grinding pit that I had become so fond of. Frank the monster, XL (channel zero promotion guy) and myself
Had been religiously had been jumpin in the pit together having mad fun. So since this one was gonna be our last one together on this tour, we decided we would go out with a fuckin bang. We jumped in early. We usually would sit out the first 2 songs then get in there. XL would be there from the start waitng on us to come out and form our circle with a few people we would recruit from the crowd. XL was the shit cuz he’d be in the pit during all of our set and Bizkit’s. I don’t know how he never got tired of that shit. Hats off to my Rick Fox looking homie. That’s who he looks like Rick Fox from the LA Lakers only he has an eye patch.
This pit like I said earlier was outrageous. It was a battle out there,
And it was very fuckin hot too. Fred once again noticed me and let people know I was in there again. The crowd went nutz as usual. Our circle was strong but damn we all got hammered as well as did some hammering. It got so crazy that people just automatically threw me up on top of the crowd. At this time Bizkit was playing “Break Stuff”. It was the perfect time too cuz they were in the middle of the song right before it get real heavy. So I got pulled up on stage and people started to go ape shit. So now I’m up there with Fred and we’re doin the part before the chorus together, and right when the song went into “give me something to break” I had made a beautiful jump that sent the crowd into a frenzy. It was truly a great moment. Later on when I got back in the crowd with the Monster and XL, Fred was doing “Re-arranged” and made a hell of a jump. He set it off cuz now people weren’t even tryin to make it over the cage; they were tryin to get as high as they could to jump back in the crowd. There was some good fuckin jumping goin on. The craziest thing happened in the pit. I saw this fine chick checkin me out from a distance. I mean she looked good. I told the Monster hey look at the fine chick over there, just to point her out nothing more. And what does the Monster do? He goes and grabs her and brings her over to our part of the pit where she stood safely with us the rest of the show. It was the craziest way to meet some I thought but hey whatever works.
When “Nookie” came on it got even more out of hand. The Monster mad a move for the top. He eventually got to the stage
And made a move for the top of the cage. The Bizkit guys started laughing. They usually are trying to pull people off the cage and stop them from getting to the top but when they saw Frank they act like they were tryin to pull him but they actually weren’t doin shit. They were tryin to keep together cuz the Monster was hangin off the cage like King Kong or something. Then all of a sudden with no warning, the Monster jumped into the crowd from on top of the cage. It was monumental. I’ll never forget that last show and I won’t forget the good times we had with Bizkit. You know, a lot of people in the beginning were asking me why are we opening for the and not the other way around? I say this what does it matter people got the 2 best shows this summer for nothing at all. I have respect for Bizkit. They have one of the best live shows around and I would do it all over again. I wouldn’t trade this experience for nothing. I’ll miss touring with them. They’re all a bunch of great dudes and their kru as well. Peace to all those who became apart of this and apart of us. We will see you again soon. Next up Europe. Stay tuned.
Before there were blogs all over the internet, B Real and Bobo were sharing their tour stories on the web. We will be presenting some of those stories for the old fans to reminisce and the new fans to learn what’s up!
Day 1 Darian Lakes Amphitheater
Buffalo NY 7/22/98
Bobo and I hit Rochester the afternoon we were having the last rehearsals for the show. We were supposed to leave LA the night before but that didn’t happen due to last minute packing and other unnecessary details. But when Bobo and I got there, there was a bit of excitement. Due to the fact that the tour was finally starting up. The rehearsal went well, even though Sen Dog hadn’t shown up yet. We had a couple of rehearsals a few days before so I wasn’t worried. Anyway the first show started off on a good vibe. I hadn’t seen a few of the other artists on the tour in awhile. Like Busta Rhymes, he’s a very good friend of mine. We go back since ‘91. I met him when He was in L.O.N.S (Leaders Of the News School) in Atlanta at a seminar called “Jack the Rapper”. Since then we’ve been good friends. We did the first “Smokin Grooves” with Busta, His show was off the hook. So needless to say I was anxious to see his new show. Next I seen the homie’s from “Gang Starr” Guru and Premier. I also hadn’t seen them in awhile either. We met them in ‘90, at least I did. Muggs already knew them from when he was in 7A3. It was the first time I had ever been in NY, Muggs took me to this club and Premier was there, man! Him and Guru got us high all night. It was a good time. That’s why this tour has such a good vibe.
Every one knows each other, and respects each other, and we’re all fans of each others’ music. So there’s a mutual respect. Yet another reason this tour is so dope, is that, when I was coming up, I was a big fan of “Public Enemy” so I was hyped on that alone when I was told they were going to be on the tour. So we all got the respectful hello’s out of the way, expressed to each other how we felt good about all of us touring together. The first show was the feeling the tour out type of show, to kind of get use to being back in the wing of doing shows and touring cuz if you’ve been away for awhile you can get rusty and sometimes the fans can’t see it but we can feel it. I think out of all the groups us (Cypress Hill) and Public Enemy had to feel it out more than any other of the groups, being that Sen Dog, Muggs, and Myself (B Real) haven’t been together on stage in 2 1/2 yrs. So I was kind of nervous. Because who knows if the chemistry on stage is gone after that long. Rehearsals are one thing, but being on stage in front of thousands of people is totally different. I think Public Enemy had more adjusting to do than us, they haven’t done a tour in 9 yrs. So I can only imagine how they felt. But When the shows actually started, they all went off well.
From “The Black Eyed Peas” to “Maya” then “Gang Starr” to “Busta & The Flipmode Squad”. Then from “Wyclef & The Refugee All Stars” to us (Cypress Hill) and finally to Public Enemy. I got say everyone had a good show, but in my opinion Busta had the most energy on stage. Him and Spliff Star (Busta’s hypeman) freaked the show. I had to give it up. But all in all everyone delivered to the crowds’ content. I don’t have anything scandalous to report yet but it’s only the beginning. That all for now. See you Bat time, same Bat channel.
